Apple fix to iPhone security flaw

Apple has released a software patch to address a recently described security flaw in the iPhone.

Experts revealed on Thursday that modified SMS messages could result in iPhones being disconnected from the network or hijacked altogether.

Apple said phones incorporating other mobile operating systems, such as Windows Mobile and Google Android, were also potentially vulnerable.

It added that no-one had actually used the flaw to gain access to an iPhone.

A spokesperson for O2, the iPhone's service provider in the UK, said: "We will be communicating to customers both through the website and proactively. We always recommend our customers update their iPhone with the latest software and this is no different."

Access all areas

Charlie Miller and Collin Mulliner told the Black Hat conference in Las Vegas that the hack works by slightly modifying the data - sent by the network and which the user does not see - that arrives as part of a text message.

The system that processes such messages is similar across different operating systems and can, once compromised, gain access across a range of applications including a phone's address book or camera.

The team say that hackers could develop programs to exploit the weakness in as little as two weeks, but told the conference that publicising the means of attack was necessary to ensure the problem was addressed.

"If we don't talk about it, somebody is going to do it silently. The bad guys are going to do it no matter what," Mr Mulliner, an independent security expert, said.

The team wrote software to exploit the weakness, targeting iPhones on four networks in Germany as well as AT&T in the US. However, they believe it would work equally well in any country.

The approach is particularly dangerous because messages are delivered automatically, and users cannot tell that they have received the malicious code.

The problem could be fixed by directly patching the vulnerability in smartphones' operating systems, or the network providers could scan for messages that look to be trying to gain access to phones via the malicious code.

The researchers said they had informed Google of the hack and that the company had already taken steps to address the problem.

The Black Hat gathering, part of a leading series of conferences for information and computer security experts, took place from 25 to 30 July.

Apple were not available to comment on the flaw.

iPhone owners get chance to set Guinness World Record

When I was a kid I always wanted to set my own world record for something sweet like the longest time spent playing Pac-Man or the longest jump ever landed on a Huffy bike with a banana seat. Alas, I never won my world record glory; banana seats are hard on landings.

It looks like the folks at Guinness world Records are set to give me another shot at world record fame with a new app for the iPhone. The game allows players to compete to set a virtual world record in events like cockroach eating, melon crush, and largest bubblegum balloon.

If your need to set a world record goes beyond the virtual world, Guinness is also running a contest to set a world record in the real world by getting the highest score on the iPhone game. The highest score submitted by August 12 will get the winner listed in the 2010 Gamer’s Edition of the world record book. The game is available now for $4.99.

Nano-phone surfaces in patent

A belated US Patent via an Australian filing mysteriously surfaced this month revealing a stunning nano-phone concept in development at Apple. The design involves a very sophisticated yet complicated dual-surface user interface. The full face-side of this device will be nothing more than a display, much like the iPhone is today, while the back-side will be primarily dominated by a force-sensitive touch based surface. Your fingers, which act as a cursor, control the face-side UI by the back-side etched controls. The dramatic design will offer users a variety of interfaces or modes to work with including one for a phone, text messaging, a traditional iPod, a camera mode and more. The design may also, according to Apple, simply offer consumers with a dual-sided display option in lieu of a force sensitive controller surface. On one hand, the design appears to be nothing shy of being revolutionary once again. On the other, the concept seems to be overly complicated. I’m sure that once we see it, it’ll all make sense. Yet until that time it arrives, I think that Apple’s design could be hotly debated.

An Apple iPod Nano-Style Cell Phone Concept Design

In Apple’s patent FIG.4 noted above, we see one of the key embodiments of this patent which incorporates mobile telephone capability. Device 400 displays numeric soft keys 405 on display screen 215 situated on front surface 210 . The user may select or activate one or more of the displayed buttons by moving their finger(s) across back-side force-sensitive touch-surface 225 [shown below] so as to position cursor 410 above (i.e., spatially coincident with) the desired button. Selection may be made by applying pressure to the back side of the device.

Now that you’ve seen the engineering team’s take on an iPod nano-style cell phone, we have to now backtrack to the beginning of this patent in order to understand how it works. In case you didn’t quite catch it in the paragraph above, Apple’s next generation nano-style iPod is going to provide us with a dual sided set of controls. Before explaining the complexities behind Apple’s new concept, it’s best to first lay out the patent as it initially flows so as to lay out the fundamentals associated with the concept.

Cross-Sectional of an iPod Nano with Two Sided User Interface

Apple’s patent FIG. 2 shown above is that of a cross-sectional view of multi-media hand-held device 200 in accordance with one embodiment of the invention. It includes device housing 205, top surface 210 having display element 215 [an LCD] and bottom surface 220 having force-sensitive touch-surface 225. As used herein, a force-sensitive touch-surface is a surface that is adapted to simultaneously detect where one or more objects touch it (e.g., fingers) and the force those objects apply to the surface.

Back-Side: Force-Sensitive Touch-Surface

Referring to Apple’s patent FIG. 3A noted below, we see a hand-held multi-media device 300 in accordance with one embodiment of the invention. It incorporates the functionality of click-wheel 305 on the device’s force-sensitive touch-surface 225 (on bottom surface 220). Click-wheel 305 may be represented on touch-surface 225 by, for example, an etched or raised outline.

Front-Side: LCD Display

So with the traditional click-wheel on the reverse side of the iPod nano, shown above as centered in patent FIG. 3A, we see that the face of the iPod nano facing the user is an LCD display. In the illustrated embodiment, navigation menu 310 and click-wheel 315 are rendered transparently (denoted by dashed lines in FIG. 3B) so that the user may continue to view whatever information was being displayed at the time they activated the back-side control. The cursor, shown as arrow 320, is controlled by your finger on the backside of the device. You don’t see your finger; you simply see your finger in the form of a cursor. So it’s not a see-through double-sided display design per se.

Once the user manipulates cursor 320 by sliding their finger across force-sensitive touch-surface 225 to the desired position (e.g., the “pause” control element position on click-wheel 315), all the user need do is apply pressure with that finger to the force-sensitive touch-surface to activate the desired action.

In another embodiment, a multi-media hand-held device such as device 300 may provide more than a single control element. In embodiments of this type, each control element (e.g., button, key, slider or click-wheel) may have an etched counterpart on back-side touch-surface 225, with each being displayed as desired (one at a time depending upon where the user’s finger is detected, or all at once). Meaning that the backside/force-sensitive side could have both a traditional click-wheel on the extreme right bottom side and a numeric set of keys on the left.

Texting, e-Mail, IM and Other Modes

In Apple’s patent FIG.5 noted above, we see device 500 displaying alpha soft keys 505 on the display element 215 (LCD) on the devices front surface 210. By selecting various keys, the user may enter character strings (e.g., string 510). As before, the user positions cursor 515 through movements of their fingers across the device’s back-side force-sensitive touch-surface; button selection is made through the application of pressure to the back-side touch-surface. As shown, the device displays alpha buttons 505 transparently so that the user may continue to view information that may be displayed “beneath” them. Of course, the alpha buttons may be opaque.

The patent presents us with a wide array of modes that the new iPod nano or nano-styled device could be used in – such as phone mode, video play mode, audio play mode, calendar mode, email mode, address book mode and image capture mode.

Overview of the Touch-Surface Controller System

Apple’s patent FIG. 6 is an illustrative implementation of hand-held multi-media device 200. The device is shown to include force-sensitive touch-surface controller 600, processor 605, memory 610 and display element controller 615. Controller 600 provides the necessary drive and sensing circuitry to obtain location and force information from force-sensitive touch-surface 225. In a typical implementation, touch-surface 225 is comprised of a number of sensing elements arranged in two-dimensional array. Each sensing element (aka “pixel”) generates an output signal indicative of the electric field disturbance (for capacitance sensors), force (for pressure sensors) or optical coupling (for optical sensors) at the sensor element. The ensemble of pixel values at a given time represents a “proximity image.” Touch-surface controller 600 provides this data to processor 605 or to memory 610. Processor 605, in turn, processes the proximity image information to correlate the user’s finger movement across touch-surface 225 with the displayed information. Memory 610 may include one or more of the following types of storage media: magnetic disks; optical media; and semiconductor memory devices such as static and dynamic random access memory (RAM), Electrically Programmable Read-Only Memory (”EPROM”), Electrically Erasable Programmable Read-Only Memory (”EEPROM”), Programmable Gate Arrays and flash devices. Display controller 615 is responsible for producing the display element signals necessary to actually display information.

Interesting yet Confusing Concept

Unfortunately, Apple’s patent leaves us in the dark as to whether the iPod nano-style device will be sold with differing preset etched controllers, a combination of etched controllers or whether the etched controls are simply inter-changeable. The tiny interface could likely accommodate two differing etched controllers per unit at any given time and no more. So it’s a little baffling at how users will be able to use the nano design for texting, phoning and as a regular click-wheel based MP3 iPod based on using back-side based etched controls. The patent does hint at simply providing a dual display device – and that’s likely the one that makes the most sense at the moment.

However, if back-sided etched controllers are to win the day, then the etch controller concept appears to be very confusing when it comes to texting or phoning. Are we basically being asked to get used to texting or using a phone pad from the backside up? – Perhaps. On that basis, sight unseen, I have to admit that I just can’t imagine that working efficiently. Then again, knowing Apple, I may just laugh at just how easy it really is with a little bit of practice. Time will tell on that one.

Apple credits John G. Elias as the sole inventor of this patent application. It would appear, on the surface at least, that the reason that this patent application missed the US cycle initially as an Apple patent is because the patent was originally owned by Mr. Elias and likely not filed initially as an Apple patent. A secondary document reveals that Apple Computer Inc was named as “the new owner” at a later time. It should be noted that John G. Elias was part owner of the now defunct FingerWorks and is currently working at Apple on other sophisticated touch related patents.

Italian iPhone fans get first carrier-deployed voice-to-SMS app

The iPhone is an undisputed hit all around the world with users in just about every country. Italian users who want to keep both hands on the wheel of that Ferrari can now get an Italian version of the Promptu ShoutOUT app customized for Telecom Italia Mobile.

The app lets users speak what they want to send in a text and the spoken words are turned into a text message and sent to another user. The app is integrated with TM’s billing system allowing the provider to charge for texts sent.

The company behind the app says that it is looking forward to rolling the app out here in America as well. The firm says that U.S. mobile subscribers send and receive more texts than they make calls.

Marbles roll onto the iPhone

One of the games that I never really found interesting was marbles. I know some people like the game; it just doesn’t make sense to me. If you are a marble aficionado, a new game app for the iPhone is now available for you.

The app is called Play Marbles and you can even put your face or other images onto the marble. The developer promises that the game is simply to learn and play. While the game is simple, it promises to be challenging as well.

Regular updates to the game will be made available and new play modes and custom features will keep the game fresh. The marble design phase is intended to be robust and the developer is running a contest for the most interesting marbles to be included in the game. The app is available now for $1.99 on the App Store.

How to Protect yourself from the iPhone virus

Want to protect yourself from the iPhone SMS Virus Apple has not released an iPhone 3.1 update yet, and I have no idea when they will be doing so. I could turn off my iPhone and keep it safe, but I’d rather keep it on! I’ve figured out a way to disable the SMS App, but I’m not sure whether or not this will still prevent the virus. Read on below to find out how you can do the same.

How to disable the SMS App

Jailbreak your iPhone using either redsn0w or purplera1n
Go to Cydia, search for OpenSSH and install it
Download an SSH client (Winscp for Windows users and Cyberduck for Mac)
Make sure WiFi is turned on, go to Settings -> WiFi. Select your network and check your iPhone’s IP. SSH in to your iPhone using the iPhone’s IP. Login with the Username: root and Password: alpine.
Navigate to the Applications directory
Locate the directory named MobileSMS.app. Right-click and click on properties. Where it says Permissions uncheck all the options.
Click OK.
To test if you did this right, tap the SMS app on your iPhone and it should crash when you launch it!

Once you’ve followed the steps above, the SMS app stops working. I’m keeping my iPhone like this until Apple releases a firmware update, or until Chronic Dev Team is able to release a patch before Apple does. If you want your SMS app back at any time you can fix it by following Step 6 and setting the permissions back to 0755.

Warning: Do not attempt to do this tutorial if you’re not sure how to SSH or change file permissions! Wait for Apple’s firmware update.

iPhone SMS Virus

An iPhone hacker Charlie Miller will release the world’s first iPhone virus today. He discovered an SMS hack 6 weeks ago and reported it to Apple, but Apple has yet to release a patch. Miller and his fellow cybersecurity researcher Collin Mulliner will both explain and reveal their iPhone SMS exploit some time today at the Blackhat cybersecurity conference in Las Vegas.

iPhone SMS hack details

How does the SMS hack work? Firstly, this hack does not requirreleae the victim to download any file. The attacker only needs to know the victim’s phone number. Miller says the attack is enabled by a serious memory corruption in the way the iPhone handles SMS messages. For the attack to work, an attacker must send hundreds of SMS control messages (different from regular SMS messages) and only the initial SMS will be seen. This attack works on both the iPhone and the Andoid. What does the iPhone SMS hack do? This hack can allow the attacker to make calls from your iPhone, steal your data, send text messages, and also spread the attack to other iPhones in your address book.

How to recognize and avoid the iPhone virus

If you get a strange text message containing any square box, even if it’s from a recognized number you may be the victim of the iPhone virus.

You have two choices:

Put your iPhone in Airplane mode: Go to Settings -> Airplane Mode and slide the button to Off.
Hold down the power button, and slide to turn your iPhone off.

The only thing we can do now is wait for Apple to release a patch. We expect Apple to release the iPhone 3.1 update by September, but hopefully this exploit causes them to release it earlier. iPhone Forensics expert, Jonathan Zdziarski and iPhone hacker p0sixninja from the Chonic Dev Team recently tweeted about the possibility to release their own patch for this vulnerability (only available through a jailbreak). I’m hoping Chronic Dev Team will be able to release a fix for this as this will show Apple that they are wrong about the jailbreaking community. Apple dislikes jailbreaking and is trying to make it illegal. Will the Chronic Dev Team release a patch first or will Apple? How to Edit Icon Names on 3.0

As you may know the 3.0 firmware has some changes in some of the Icon names. The one most common is the SMS app. Going from Text to Messages will make Any them designed for 2.x not have the custom Text icon. How do you fix this? You can do this from your Computer using SSH, or Your iPhone/iPod using iFile. Read the whole article for both ways.

Using your Computer:

When you use your computer you need a program called SSH. This can be done using any SSH program such as WinSCP or CuteFTP. Also, make sure you have OpenSSH Installed from Cydia. After you get SSH working, (For any help in SSH search Ty’s YouTube for the SSH tutorial) You can begin editing the names of files to make the icons work. Go into your Themes folder and find your theme. Go to the “Icons” folder and find the Icon you need to change. After that name it the way the application is named. NOTE: It is very important that you name it correctly or it won’t work! Ex: To change the SMS app name the Text.png to Messages.png. (Using Caps and everything)

Using your iPhone or iPod Touch:

Another way you can do, which i find easier, is to use your iPhone itself. When using your iPhone/iPod Touch you will need a Mobile Finder program. The only one, that i know of, that is in 3.0 is iFile. (For more information on iFile click HERE) After you have that installed go into the Themes folder and once again find your theme. Find the “Icons” folder and look for your Icon. basically the same proses as the SSH, just from your iPhone. Once again remember to name the files AS IT IS.

We mourn for the loss of my great friend. He was with me through thick and thin, through good and bad,through hacks and tests, and now it is finnaly over. He will be happy in the great iPod heaven up there, and his cousin, the iPhone 3GS will soon come. The only thing now to do is..... Smash It!!!!

Due to the loss of my iPod Touch 1st gen, from my insurence money, i will be able to claim for a 16gb iPhone 3GS! How great is that!

iPhone OS 3.1 Features

Yesterday Apple sent out BETA versions of iPhone OS 3.1 to developers. The reason for a new firmware so soon is that Apple released 3.0 too early, and forgot some features. So what are these features expected to be in 3.1? Here is a list of them so far.

-Voice control now has Bluetooth. You can use Voice Control while using a bluetooth headset.
-When trimming video clips on the 3G S you can now save the original instead of overwriting it all together.
-Launching apps, closing apps, start-up, and shutdown have improved
-OpenGL and Quartz have seen improvements.
-New APIs allow developers of third-party application to access and edit videos.
-MMS is now enabled, but not yet supported by AT&T.
-Vibrate function enabled for arranging icons. This is useful when you accidentally get into arrange mode.
-Theres now a Fraud Protection feature in Safari
-You can now copy phone numbers, using copy and paste, and paste them into the dial pad in the iPhone’s Phone app.

iPhone 3G 3.0 unlock!

As you know the Dev Team have been working on the iPhone 3G 3.0 unlock on 3.0 firmware. They called this new software, or package ultrasn0w as you may already know already. Well now they have finally released it, after saying it would be released on Friday last week. So iPhone 3G users may now download ultrasn0w from cydia via a new repo. So just click above for the full guide.

First you must remember this is only for iPhone 3G users! Not normal iPhone users on iPhone 3G S users. So keep that in mind please.

Now add this source to Cydia or Icy:

Next, you should go to changes and download ultrasn0w which will come up at the top. Once you have install place in your Sim Card and and reboot your iPhone.

Finally in a few secounds your new carrier logo will come up at the top of your iPhone where the old one was eg. AT&T.

Note: Turn off the 3G because some carriers don’t work with 3G and could cause different problems. You can do this by going to Settings > General > Network > Disable 3G Connection.

iPhone 3GS 3.0 Jailbreak release!

Yes, this is what you've all been waiting for. A jailbreak for the iPhone 3GS. And it's awesome. To get started right now, go to purplera1n.com. Download it. Make sure you have windows(but not 7), the latest iTunes installed, and an iPhone 3GS with 3.0 firmware. Connect your iPhone normally. Click "make it ra1n". Wait. On bootup, run Freeze, the purplera1n installer app. Hopefully you'll figure out what to do from there. Best tutorial gets linked to from purplera1n site. This tool is beta. Make sure to have everything backed up before running. Also if Cydia doesn't show up after running Freeze, reboot.

The iPhone 3GS is hot!….Literally!

Is your iPhone 3G S overheating? Reports to Apple show that some are having issues with their iPhone overheating. What causes this? Direct contact with the sun can be one cause. Using applications like GPS and iPod while in the sun for long periods of time could cause this as well. Maybe even leaving your iPhone in the car on a hot day. Whatever the reason Apple documents show that there are warnings on the overheating iPhone making it unusable while its hot, this does not include emergency calls. What is the result? Some cases have seen a burn mark on the back of their iPhone. As shown in this picture you can see the discolor on the back. Another report shows that faulty battery can lead to the heat, and may even be recalled. Apple has yet to make a response to this issue so far, but if you do have issues with this you can go to any Apple store and get a new iPhone. If this is the case act quick because others may have this same problem, and as some reports claim Apple is running out of the iPhone quick.

Once you have installed yellowsn0w, please report your success or failure here. it’ll help us with the bug fixes.

We have released the 0.9.6 beta yellowsn0w 3G unlock application, 0.9.6 beta should fix EVEN MORE problems :-). Please remember to add feedback -> here <- as we can get useful feedback that will help us. We suggest that everyone upgrade to this version.
Please note the following:

BASICS
The unlock works exclusively with baseband 02.28.00. This baseband is provided by the latest firmware update (2.2) from Apple. You’ll need to upgrade to this release using iTunes and then use QuickPwn to activate etc. There are plenty of tutorials about this on iclarified, bigboss, modmi and other established tutorial sites. Because it works on 02.28.00, it is available to everyone on the planet. This means we don’t need to unnecessarily expose holes in earlier basebands, which is an important concern.

The application is a small daemon that is launched on boot. It injects the payload at boot and also whenever there is a baseband reset. You won’t notice anything about it other than that your third-party sim now works. It’s a small program and unobtrusive. There is no GUI (this is by design).

You can add the application using the sources outlined below. There are Cydia and Installer sources available, so use whichever you are comfortable using.
yellowsn0w is completely removable through Cydia, the command line, and iTunes.

DETAILS
There is a known issue with SIM cards that have STK (SIM Toolkit) application menus. These menus are usually items such as “top up” “get credit” “lotto numbers” etc. These menu items confuse the application sometimes. Removing and reinserting the SIM once after reboot (give it about 10 secs 60 seconds (with v0.9.1) after you see the slide to unlock widget) fixes this issue. We’re working on a better fix. Update: version 0.9.4 fixes this for many (but probably not all) users who previously had to wait a minute and then replug the sim.
For those of you using SIM cards without STK menus, the application has some optional arguments that will make the unlock much faster for you. So either experiment on your own (use “yellowsn0w -h” for usage) or wait for a customization writeup.
After you install yellowsn0w via Cydia, you should return to the Cydia main menu then reboot your iPhone with the 3rd party SIM installed. Wait for the slide to unlock screen, then wait 10 or 15 secs more. If you don’t see your carrier name pop up, then remove your SIM, reinsert it, and wait 10 secs more. This is the step we’ll be working on eliminating next.

RANDOM
The application is version 0.9.5 This is considered beta software, you use it at your own risk. You know the score.
The application is released on a non-commerical basis. Please do not accept pirates and scummy ripoffs of this software. We license this software for single use and in a non-commerical environment (meaning you can’t charge for it). The techniques and methods used are not to be used by third party companies. We are watching you Jody…we won’t be so forgiving this time.

If the soft unlock doesn’t work for you on day 1 (literally day 1, of 2009!) then please don’t panic or be impatient. This is new territory for everyone, so enjoy the ride as much as you can :)

UPDATES
As of v 0.9.4 there’s no longer a one-minute delay step. If you don’t see your carrier when your homescreen comes up, you may still need a sim reinsert (for now).

If you are in the U.S. and are trying this with T-Mobile, you must turn off the 3G switch in Settings. The -q option is now deprecated in 0.9.4+ (it’s now always in quick mode).

No PIN support yet. Remember how we said this was beta? Well we’re still working out the flow for SIMs with PINs enabled. Please disable any PIN you may have on that SIM before trying yellowsn0w, for now.

The unlock will silently quit on anything other than baseband 02.28.00. It detects the wrong version and just quits to avoid any damage. Please double check your Modem Firmware setting in Settings->General->About.

Ultrasn0w's big week!

As anyone reading this blog must already know, this is the big week where Apple releases their official 3.0 FW to the public (Wednesday), and then the new iPhone2,1 hardware, aka the iPhone 3GS (Friday).

On Tuesday evening (just before the big Apple release) we’ll do a live demo of the yellowsn0w carrier unlock working on official 3.0 firmware. The actual link for the feed will be twittered by @MuscleNerd and also placed here when the feed starts. The demo should answer everything you need to know about the new yellowsn0w. But it’s good news for iPhone 3G unlockers everywhere.

Meanwhile, we’re in the middle of testing our PwnageTool and QuickPwn tools, which will work with iTunes 8.2. The jailbreak of course continues to work on 3.0 for all devices it ever worked on, thanks due the Pwnage 2.0 technique released last summer. Our tools will be released no sooner than the Apple release (just in case!).

redsn0w is an easy to use, multi-platform, multi-device jailbreaking and unlocking (iPhone 2G only) tool for the iPhone 2G (original iPhone), the iPhone 3G (but not the 3GS) and also the iPod touch (first and second generation). Currently it is available for Windows and Mac OS X (there are some issues using redsn0w with OS X PPC, please use an Intel Mac until we have this problem resolved).
REDSN0W PROVIDES SIMILAR FUNCTIONALITY TO QUICKPWN.
If you want to build custom firmware files with more flexibility it is suggested that you use ‘PwnageTool’ on Mac OS X.
GOLDEN RULE: If you are using a 3G iPhone with yellowsn0w and rely on yellowsn0w to obtain cellular service, then you should NOT use redsn0w right now. Ultrasn0w (the 3G carrier unlock) is not included with this release and therefore your baseband will be locked and unable to use an operator other than the official one it was bought for. UltraSn0w will be released via APT (cydia and icy) soon. If you have an original iPhone (1st generation) then 3.0 carrier unlock works with this redsn0w release.
Yellowsn0w in its current form will NOT work with the baseband version that is present in the 3.0 update, you will need Ultrasn0w, which will be released sometime soon, Ultrasn0w will work with all iPhone 3G models (but not 3GS), even ones that were previously unlockable, Ultrasn0w (when available) will be released via APT (this means you will be able to get it via Cydia or Icy).
Please read all parts of this post before downloading and using these tools.

This app is suitable for the recent 3.0 release
redsn0w will NOT work for the iPhone 3GS.

Jailbroke an iPod Touch 2G in blue water apple store!

It has is complete! I had to wait a little while for the custom firmware to be made, but it worked! 3.0 firmware, used ultrasn0w. I used a beta version of it, because the released version does not support iPod Touch 2G. I had only one slight problem, when a apple employe came up to me and asked if i needed any help, but thats pretty much it. All has gone well, and the iPod is in my hand. My next step will be to ask him why icy is on this iPod, and not on the app store. Wish me luck again!!!

I have just entered the apple store and am now posting to you using one of apple's newest MacBook Air's. I have connected up to this computer an iPhone 3GS. It is amazing! I have not posted on the iPhone 3GS yet, but it is pretty sweet! I am planning to get the 32gb version, and then hack hack hack!!!!! I am about to attempt a jailbreak on an iPhone 3g connected to a mac with 3.0 firmware in the apple store!!! I am going to use ultrasn0w, lets hope this works! If i could, yes, i would jailbreak the iPhone 3GS, but there is no such thing at the moment. I will get back to you when i have finished the jailbreak. Wish me luck!

3.0 Beta 5 and iTunes 8.2 Released

The new beta 5 version of the 3.0 firmware has now been released to developers along with a new version of iTunes. As with the previous beta 4 you will need to update your iTunes to the latest version to install the beta. As you guys probably know I have updated my iPhone to the beta 3.0 firmware and I am currently on beta 3. These updates are really getting annoying. I can’t keep updating my iPhone every few days when a new beta is released. And they actually force you to do it by making the firmwares expire so that if you want to get pass the connect to iTunes screen you have to update it. The previous beta 4 was released only 8 days ago, but the reason for so many updates in so little time could be that Apple is rushing to get everything ready for the upcoming WWDC 09, thats just one month away.

iPhone 3.0 Beta 4 Released for Developers

About two weeks ago 3.0 beta 3 was released for developers and was later leaked on torrents and uploaded to the net. Now 3.0 beta 4 has been released for paid developers in the iPhone Developer Program. It was released yesterday and has been leaked already on torrents. The Non-Dev Team jailbreak hasn’t been released yet so if you want a jailbreak don’t upgrade yet!

Note: We’ve gotten reports that developers must install the iTunes 8.2 pre-release before attempting to install iPhone OS 3.0 Beta 4.

For the people who update ModMyi tell us that the store settings are working now. This means people who upgrade will be able to buy from the iTunes Store and App Store on there iPhone or iPod Touch.

Search results can now be shown or hidden and the order adjusted (Unchanged from Beta 3)

SMS messages that fail to send now appear with an exclamation mark. Demonstration of deleting and forwarding of individual SMS messages. Has been available since beta 1 but never shown on World of Apple before.

We also have found out that in MMS when taking a picture from your camera, it will ask you if you want to take the picture, want to save it or want to re-take it again. I’m not sure if this also goes for the camera.

Copy and paste has made its way to the Calculator app.

Remember before upgrading to 3.0 beta 4 you must do it the right way, by not connecting to the Internet. Please read this post before upgrading, please don’t do this if you don’t know what you are doing.

Is Hulu really coming to the iPhone?

Rumors have been swirling around that a Hulu app will soon make its place in the App Store. I myself first heard the report from CNet that the app is in the making and will be here in just a few months. I felt this a good thing to post on the blog later so I did a quick check on that post and i seen they had added an update quoting one of the workers from Hulu saying that they do not have plans to build an iPhone application. So I put off the blog post since it was obliviously just a rumor. I later was talking with a friend I mentioned how nice it would be to have a Hulu app on the iPhone so I went back to the blog post to give him so he could check it out. But I noticed they had removed the quote from the person at Hulu.

This could mean a few things. 1. Hulu asked them to remove the quote. 2. They removed it so people will talk and get more publicity. 3. They actually didn’t speak with someone at Hulu.

So will we see a Hulu application coming to the iPhone? I think not, let me elaborate on this…

If you are a user of the wonderful application Boxee you will know that Hulu asked them to be removed from they’re streaming sources because of issues with Hulu’s advertisers not being happy with it. This made Boxee users furious and puzzled at the same time. The reason being the adverts that display durring the videos still show when streaming Hulu video through Boxee but they didn’t want it. So anyways it ended up Hulu told them they had to remove it. So I am thinking if Hulu’s advertisers doesn’t want people streaming content through Boxee on your Apple TV or Mac, why would the advertisers be happy with streaming to the iPhone? Just something I thought I would mention.

Voice Recognition found in the 3.0 Firmware

Lots of features are being discovered in the 3.0 beta firmwares and this newest one is voice recognition. This new feature is called Jibbler, but it wont be an app you open, it will be built into the homescreen. This new voice feature will be more like an add-on to the new Spotlight search feature in the 3.0 firmwares. We suspect these new voice features will be similar to whats in the newest iPod Shuffle. Adding voice recognition to the iPhone will bring it up to speed with a lot of other phones in that aspect. Although I don’t see any big need for it since voice recognition can get very annoying at times. But the more features the better!

QuickOffice for iPhone and iPod Touch

Have you ever been working on a paper on your computer but then suddenly have to go somewhere? Even though you haven’t finished your paper yet? Well here is the solution! It is called QuickOffice and it is 20 dollars in the App Store (unless you get it from installous and I already did).

So basically this is Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel for your iPhone or iPod Touch. It is simply amazing! You can transfer the files from your computer to your iPhone or visa versa with wifi! No cable required! You can create new text or excel documents and edit them and do you entire assignment on your iPhone! Then when you get to school just go to the computer lab, hook up to the wifi network and print it! Its simply fantastic! More instructions on how to use this are in the application. So go download this from Installous (reccommended; 20 bucks is alot lol) and start writing your papers on the go! Thanks guys!

Downgrade Your 3G Baseband - pHaseBanDowngrader

This new product for iPhone 3G will allow you to downgrade your baseband from 02.30.03 to 02.28.00 based on GeoHot’s method. Previously, those of you that upgraded to 2.2.1 could not use YellowSn0w. But now you can! iPhone 3G users can now upgrade from 2.2 to 2.2.1 and have it unlocked. Make sure you are on 2.2.1 firmware before trying this. I don’t recommend doing this, it still is pretty unstable and you need to know what you are doing. So please unless you have got some time don’t try this.

Please read the following, which was written by thebigboss source a few days ago on what they have learned about doing this and some of the problems in doing it. I haven’t tried this because I have iPhone 2G, but a lot of people have told me it works great.

Many guys from irc.osx86.org had tested it and they are loving the downgraded iPhone. To use that tool, you need to have an iPhone with the Bootloader 5.8. If your iPhone was manufactured before September 2008, you are 5.8. If your device is 2.2.1 OOB (Out Of Box), you can’t downgrade the Baseband because you have bootloader 5.9.

Instructions:

Download this zip folder which can be found here
SSH into your iPhone and put the downloaded folder (phasebandowngrader) inside the folder /Applications/
In MobileTerminal.app, type “login” and enter “root” as user, the default password is “alpine”.
Now, type “cd /Applications/phasebandowngrader && ./phasebandowngrader”.
Follow the screen instructions.

What are torrents???

LOADS of my friends come up to me and say, "What are torrents?" I shrug everytime i here that question, because of the thought that THE PIRATE BAY might go any time now. Well, if you are one of the people who don't have a clue what torrents are, then here's a quick guide on what torrents are!

Ok, so, a torrent file can be used with a torrent application, like bittorent or utorrent. It is a file, which allows you to download albums, movies, games etc. off other peoples computers who are seeding the file. Once you download the entire torrent file, you then become a seed, allowing other people to download it off your computer! Simple really! But i myself don't seed, due to the fact it slows down my laptop. So screw you non-seeder haterz! Ok, so, when you are downloading the file, you are a leacher. So when you go to download the files off mininova or the pirate bay, go for the most seeder, and the least leachers!

Whats up with The Pirate Bay?

Pirate Bay's Peter Sunde, speaking on his website: 'We cannot and wouldn't pay'

A court in Sweden has jailed four men behind The Pirate Bay (TPB), the world's most high-profile file-sharing website, in a landmark case.

Frederik Neij, Gottfrid Svartholm Warg, Carl Lundstrom and Peter Sunde were found guilty of breaking copyright law and were sentenced to a year in jail.

They were also ordered to pay $4.5m (£3m) in damages.

Record companies welcomed the verdict but the men are to appeal and Sunde said they would refuse to pay the fine.

The damages were awarded to a number of entertainment companies, including Warner Bros, Sony Music Entertainment, EMI, and Columbia Pictures.

However, the total awarded fell short of the $17.5m in damages and interest the firms were seeking.

Speaking to the BBC, the chairman of industry body the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) John Kennedy said the verdict sent out a clear message.

"These guys weren't making a principled stand, they were out to line their own pockets. There was nothing meritorious about their behaviour, it was reprehensible."

The four men denied the charges throughout the trial, saying that because they did not actually host any files, they were not doing anything wrong.

Speaking on Swedish Radio, assistant judge Klarius explained how the court reached its findings.

"The court first tried whether there was any question of breach of copyright by the file-sharing application and that has been proved, that the offence was committed.

"The court then moved on to look at those who acted as a team to operate the Pirate Bay file-sharing service, and the court found that they knew that material which was protected by copyright but continued to operate the service," he said.

Going on, Salomonsson spoke about Gottfrid’s comments yesterday when he called the Roswall “a crazy bastard” for the way he calculated the damages. This comment was because the Prosecutor has his sums wrong, he said, noting that while the Prosecutor claims there are 64 adverts on TPB, there are really just 4. Salomonsson said the revenue is closer 700,000 kroner rather than the millions claimed. Furthermore, he says that the advert deal shown to the court many times never actually came about, so therefore it should not be accepted as evidence.

OMG!!! 3.0 beta 3 JAILBREAK!!!

On April 14 Apple released iPhone OS 3.0 beta 3 build 7A280f to developers. You know the drill! With each update comes a new jailbreak. Even though iPhone OS 3.0 is still in beta, developers still want to keep the jailbreak. Especially developers that develop for the jailbroken app store. As of this post, QuickPWN 3.0 Beta 3 has been released! Remember, this is an “unofficial release” as it is not created by the iPhone Dev Team. The latest iPhone 3.0 beta 3 firmware has noticeably improved in speed and performance so it’s worth the update. As of right now you can only jailbreak on the iPhone 3.0 Beta 3, iPhone 3G 3.0 beta 3, and iPod Touch 1st Gen 3.0 beta 3 firmware. Support for iPod Touch 2nd gen has not been added. Saurik is working on adding support for Cydia on iPhone OS 3.0 so it won’t work yet. Jailbreaking with this QuickPWN release will install the Icy app created by RipDev. Once you’ve jailbroken you can launch Icy, refresh the sources and install OpenSSH to SSH into it.

iPhone 3.0 Video Recording

We have found out in 3.0 beta 2, that the iPhone will have a video recording application. This could replace the Cycorder in cydia, or for some 3G users Video Recorder 3G. It has been finally confirmed by a Developer with this screenshot of it in action! This will be great for the next iPhone, which has said to have a 3.2 megapixel camera.

What the hell is SSH?

Many people have no idea what SSH is. SSH lets you access all the files in your device, and edit, copy, paste or delete any file. You can use this for copying over rom files, which are located under this post!
To do this, you either need a PC or MAC, and an SSH program (winscp or cyberduck).
If you want to SHH into you iPod Touch or iPhone, it has to be jailbroken, and you need to download openssh from cydia (or icy, depending on what firmware you are on). Open ssh is not an app, and does not have an icon. Open up cyberduck on MAC or winscp on a pc and you will see some box's that you have to fill in. For username type root and for password type alpine. The host name is your IP address, which you can locate by going on setting on your iPod and clicking the little blue arrow next to the wifi connection. Put the IP address in the Host section, and your done!
Now you can see all you files on your iPod or iPhone and do whatever the hell you want with them!!

Assassin’s Creed leaps from XBOX to the iPhone

In the passed couple days, screenshots have emerged on the web of the new version of Assassin’s Creed by Gameloft for the iPhone. This definitely an OMG moment for fans of the game as it brings a whole new level of uber coolness to the iPhone.
In what appears to be a side-scrolling platform game, this is sure to bring the amazing graphics and stunts that made the XBOX version a success. You will control Altair (the protagonist of the game) with your left thumb, making use of the analogue pad to control him in the bottom left corner of the screen. To perform an action, you will use your right thumb and select from a series of jumps/attacks with their own buttons burrowed into the bottom right of the screen.
This is looking to be a port of the DS version of the game. So if you have already played that version, you will familiar with it. No word on pricing yet or release date, but it is anticipated to be released in the App Store in the next couple of weeks.

Jailbreak iPod and iPhone 2.2.1!

The iPhone Dev Team has just released the official QuickPWN 2.2.1 jailbreak for MAC users. Windows users, the official Windows version of QuickPWN has been released. Scroll down below to download it.

Before you update here are some important things you should read first.
1. iPhone 3G users: If you want to unlock your iPhone 3G, do not upgrade to firmware 2.2.1 through iTunes, you must use a custom firmware through PwnageTool (only available to MAC users).

2. Firmware 2.2.1 permanently upgrades the iPhone 3G’s baseband to 02.30.03 and yellowsn0w unlock will not work with this baseband (so you won’t have an unlock if you upgrade your baseband). You must make a custom firmware with baseband 02.28 using PwnageTool.

3. If you’re using MAC 105.6 you won’t be able to get into DFU Mode but here is how you can do this:

1. You will need an account with ADC (Apple Developer Connection) this is free and takes a few minutes to sign up, you should read the terms and conditions carefully and you should only sign up if you are thinking of developing applications in the future - http://developer.apple.com/mac/
2. Download the disk image “IOUSBFamily Log release for Mac OS X 10.5.5 Build 9F33” (yes, that is a “5” in 10.5.5 - this is a developer debug package of the USB kernel extension).
3. Install IOUSBFamily-315.4.1.pkg from within the disk image
4. Reboot your system!

iPhone 3G locked users
If you don’t ever want to unlock your iPhone 3G then just update to firmware 2.2.1 through iTunes and run QuickPWN to jailbreak.

iPhone 2G users
Just update to firmware 2.2.1 through iTunes and run QuickPWN in order to jailbreak and unlock your iPhone.

iPod Touch 1G users
Update to firmware 2.2.1 through iTunes and run QuickPWN to jailbreak.

You know you want all those apps on the appstore but do you really want to pay all that money? I know i dont! Im going to tell you how to get all those apps for free on 2.2.1 and bellow! Your device has to be jailbroken! Ok, so go ahead and open up cydia, and click on Manage. Then you click on Sources and click edit. Click add and then add this source:

The http:// will already be there for you.

Once you have done that, click on the source, or go to Sections and click Hackulo.us
You will be greeted by 7 apps, download miPatch Firmware 2.2.1 and Installous. You need to download an app from the appstore before you can use Installous. I would download the facebook app. Now you can download any app you want, from installous! Its that simple....ish!

Jailbreak iPod touch 2nd gen 2.2.1

Are you an iPod Touch 2G owner? Today is a good day for you! The Dev-Team have finally released a patch with the codename “24kPwn” which will allow you to perform an untethered iPod Touch 2G jailbreak. Untethered means your iPod Touch 2G won’t need to be rejailbroken every time you reboot your iPod Touch 2G. This patch will always make your iPod Touch 2G jailbreakable no matter what firmware Apple releases. The Dev-Team were originally planning on holding on to this exploit until Apple released the next version of the iPhone so that Apple wouldn’t patch it up but they were forced to release it today because another company somehow found this exploit and started selling it.
Currently the Dev-Team has not packaged this into a PwnageTool/QuickPWN software yet but it will be released in their next official QuickPWN/PwnageTool release. If you cannot wait for the official QuickPWN/PwnageTool release you can try QuickFreedom, a GUI iPod Touch 2G jailbreak software developed by @DanCool999 on iPod Touch Fans forums. Use QuickFreedom or any other iPod Touch 2G jailbreak software at your own risk, I am not responsible for anything that happens to your iPod Touch 2G.

Okay guys so there has been a new beta released ONCE AGAIN by apple for the 3.0 software. It is iPhone 3.0 Beta 3 and here are the new features:

First let me say this, if you enjoy using Skype on 3G, DO NOT UPDATE. Apple restricts users for using Skype over 3G

- MMS works with modified carrier bundle on German T-Mobile network.
- Spotlight now saves the last search.
- Speed improvements.
- Option for iPods that let you change what your double tap home button is.
- You can change spotlight to search for what you want to search for ex everything but applications.
- iPod icon is aligned.
- Restrictions now add In-App Purchases and Location.
